Give the waistcoat a new season update
I may not be returning to school or college but there is something about September that makes one think of a fresh start and an updating of your wardrobe.
You won’t be getting a school uniform but it is the perfect time to have a little think about your work/every day clothing which is a uniform of sorts.
It’s that time of year when you can give up the ghost of trying to dress for summer (not that we’ve worn much summer clothing this year) and fully embrace autumnal dressing.
At the very least, I’m still wearing a little bit of my summer pieces but layering up for an autumn vibe. One piece that I’m carrying through from the summer is the waistcoat.
I have a black plisse set with waistcoat and wide leg trousers which will wok equally well for autumn and I also purchased a cream waistcoat that for summer I paired with shorts.
I’ll now be giving them a new season update and wearing with wide leg jeans or with a silky slip skirt and trainers and then popping an oversized blazer over the top. If you really wanted to give this look an on trend update, you could add a burgundy handbag into the mix.
Burgundy is a huge colour story particularly in accessories so if you want to give a nod to the trend without breaking the bank, then grab a fabulous handbag.
There are so many stylish options out there and the rich colour means that even an inexpensive item can look very spendy in the right shade of burgundy.
It also pairs well with one of my favourite trends of AW24 and that is the suede jacket. I’m especially happy as I have three suede jackets in my wardrobe that I’ve had for years and I’m looking forward to styling them up.
Brown and suede go particularly well together and I have a vintage brown suede jacket with fringing that I’ve had for a long time so I think it’s time I got it out and got a bit more wear out of it.
If you’re looking to invest in suede, try shopping vintage first as you can find some of the most beautiful jackets in vintage shops. Just add a dark wash denim and a perhaps a burgundy t-shirt and you’ve got a gorgeous luxe outfit.
One thing that most people have in their wardrobe and that can be worn all year round is a floral dress. It’s so easy to style it up for autumn and better still it doesn’t need to be packed away seasonally.
I love to wear a darker floral print in autumn with knee high boots and an oversized blazer and it’s the perfect mix of layers for transitional dressing.
I can wear a dress and blazer when it gets a little cooler so long as my feet are warm, so it’s with great pleasure that I get the boots out once again.
I’ve got a few pairs in the wardrobe that I wear year after year including a simple black pair from H&M and a cream pair of knee high cowboy boots that I can’t remember where I got them but they go with absolutely everything.
I’m really making a conscious effort not to buy much this season and to just make the most of what I already have and this is made easier by having some of these great basics in the wardrobe.
