Cork Cine Club is back again for season #26
Cork Cine Club returns this month for its 26th and latest season bringing some of the most interesting independent world cinema to Cork. The new season of ten films runs from 26 September until 5 December, showing films from Germany, Japan, Lithuania, Iran/Australia, France/Cape Verde, Denmark, Mexico, South Korea, and France.
They are screened on Thursday nights at 8pm in Cork College of FET, Douglas Street Campus. The season opens with ‘The Teachers’ Lounge’ which was a 2024 Oscar nominee for Best International Feature Film and scored an impressive 96% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Set in a German secondary school, an idealistic young teacher’s relaxed rapport with her students is put under stress when a series of thefts occur at the school.
A staff investigation leads to accusations and mistrust among parents, colleagues, and students. Director İlker Çatak creates a riveting work about school as a microcosm of society. Playing out like a thriller, it is a study in power dynamics, with themes of truth, justice, racism and children’s rights that demonstrate how individuals are worn down between entrenched positions. Cork Cine Club is non-profit and run entirely by volunteers. Its mission is to give local audiences the chance to see a range of world cinema not usually available on commercial cinema screens. Since its founding in 2010, the Cine Club has offered more than 200 of the best in independent films to Cork cinephiles. Cork Cine Club is supported by Access Cinema, a resource organisation for regional cultural cinema, and by The Arts Council of Ireland. Tickets €8.50/€7 (concession) are available online from Powertik or by cash or card at the door. For details, trailers, reviews and more, see corkcineclub.com.
