Stephen guiding Gay Project into its next chapter

The new chairperson of the Gay Project has said it’s especially meaningful for him to give back to the organisation that has had such a profound impact on his life.

The Gay Project said Stephen Spillane brings a wealth of experience and passion to his new role as chairperson.

A former participant in the Gay Project's associated youth group, the group said he has grown into an accomplished activist and leader within the LGBTI+ community.

A spokesperson said: “His deep connection to the organisation, combined with his professional expertise, makes him uniquely positioned to guide the Gay Project into its next chapter.”

Stephen Spillane said: “I am truly honoured to step into the role of chairperson. Having been a part of the Gay Project as a young person, it is especially meaningful for me to give back to an organisation that has had such a profound impact on my life. I look forward to continuing to work with the board and the wider community to continue fostering a space where LGBTQ+ people feel supported, valued, and empowered.”

Gay Project is a Cork-based NGO that works to support and advocate for LGBTI+ people through a variety of programmes and initiatives, including mental health support, community events, and educational workshops. The organisation aims to promote inclusion and ensure that all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can live freely and safely.

Stephen replaces John Buttimer as chairperson. John Buttimer, who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 2012-2013, has played a pivotal role in guiding the Gay Project through several years of growth and progress.

John was a “massive support and guidance to the Gay Project staff as the organisation navigated its way through and out of the Covid-19 pandemic. The board extends its heartfelt gratitude to John for his continued service, dedication, and vision as a member on the Gay Project Board,” the spokesperson added.
