Step right up, antifolks
There’s going to be punk poetry pandemonium on Leeside this weekend when Cork duo Wasps vs Humans support loud Louth nonconformist Jinx Lennon.
Both acts will be bringing their own unique mix of punk antifolk, beats, and noise to Fred Zeppelins in Cork city today, Friday.
Lennon has been at the periphery of the Irish music scene since the mid-'80s playing in Novena Babes, Silver Seeds, Sneaky Pete, and The Ostrich before going solo in 1999. Widely considered to be Ireland's premier punk poet, he writes about his own head wrecks, the local oddballs, the drama, and the characters of Dundalk border existence and beyond.
This year Lennon already has two Irish tours under his belt, two nights at Glastonbury, a performance on the East European fishing ship, Ms Stubnitz, in Hamburg, Electric Picnic, and recently a stint in Glasgow.
His next album, ‘The Hate Agents Leer At The Last Isle Of Hope’ is set for release in April 2025.
Wasps vs Humans was initially a solo project for punk poet/drummer, Carl Antony Plover. Having partnered up with musician wife, Linda Plover, they have honed their distinctive alt punk/folk sound over the last year, releasing their debut album 'Scratchcard Empires' earlier this month.
With a reputation for their high-octane live performances, their debut album reflects the raw energy, typical of the WvH's sound: an anarchic mix of drums, bodhrán, whistles, punk poetry, songs, and beats.
Featuring singles, '20 million Andrew Tates', 'Price You Pay', and 'Ugly America', ‘Scratchcard Empires’ is a dark take on life’s expectations, dealing with disappointment, inner city crime, an obsessive fame craving culture, with a huge dollop of desperation.
Both Jinx Lennon and Wasps VS Humans have shared the stage with the likes of John Cooper Clarke, The Fall, Whipping Boy, and Christy Moore. Their last Cork gig for 2024, they team up once more with antifolk border schizo fffolkmusic, spoken verbal bile to pull the good side out, neanderthal beats, and lyrics with a garage rock state of mind.
Doors open at 9pm and tickets are available through Eventbite, priced at €15 plus booking fee.
