Marking the very finest in Irish hospitality

The Irish Hotel Awards, a highlight in the hospitality calendar, took place on 22 October at the luxurious Johnstown Estate in Enfield. This year’s event brought together the giants of Irish hospitality for an evening dedicated to recognizing excellence across the country, with a some top performers from Cork, the Munster region, and beyond.

Representing Cork city and county, Midleton Park Hotel and Oriel House Hotel both emerged as notable winners, showcasing the high standards of service and commitment to guest experience that the region is known for. Across Munster, other regional standouts included Waterford Castle, Faithlegg (one of my personal favourite places in Ireland), Clayton Limerick, and Dingle Skellig Hotel (always worth a visit), each taking home well-deserved accolades for their achievements in a competitive industry. The overall winner Hotel of the Year went to Johntown Estate – based on my experience, well deserved.

The evening was made even more memorable by the Johnstown Estate’s meticulous hospitality. Set within the newly opened Forde Suites, guests enjoyed an atmosphere of elegance befitting such a prestigious occasion. The event was enhanced by a gourmet menu crafted by Chef Tommy Butler and his team, with a standout dessert of Jaffa cake, delightfully paired with orange-flavoured honeycomb (giving me an idea for a dessert I will try soon), stealing the show.

Shane Smith, Managing Director of NI Media, which organizes the Irish Hotel Awards, underscored the event’s celebration of not just the industry’s leaders but the full range of staff who contribute to its success.

“This evening we sit here in a room of industry giants, the people who make this industry on this beautiful island so hospitable,” said Smith. “But the real giants of hospitality are those working behind the scenes—our KPs, housekeepers, receptionists, and every dedicated team member who brings warmth and excellence to every guest's experience.”

The evening was supported by key sponsors, including Clearer Water, Clearer Twist, and Bluebell Falls Goat’s Cheese.

In all, it was an unforgettable night celebrating those who define Irish hospitality, with Cork and Munster’s winners shining brightly as leaders in the field. Johnstown Estate is a beautiful hotel with a steep history and an excellent spa – where I spent a full morning of pampering.

Yours truly also presented some awards on the night and being able to see the smiling proud faces of the winners close up was a delight.
