€5,535 served up for charity
Sunday’s Well Boating & Tennis Club recently showed their love for Edel House by hosting a tournament to raise money for the women’s and children's homeless shelter.
The club recently hosted their annual Mary Collins Tennis Tournament, which generated €5,535 for Edel House, Good Shepherd Cork’s shelter.
For the second year in a row, Edel House benefited from proceeds raised at the event which was sponsored by Alive Coaching and dairy co-operative Ornua.
Speaking at the cheque handover at Edel House, Sr Jane Murphy, Good Shepherd Cork, said: “On behalf of the management and staff at Edel House, we are delighted to be the chosen charity again this year, and we are extremely grateful to Sunday’s Well Boating & Tennis Club for hosting this fantastic fundraising event.
“We are particularly grateful to the sponsors who have generously supported our work this year, including Alive Coaching and Ornua. It’s very much appreciated by all of us at Good Shepherd Cork.”
In addition to its funding contribution, Ornua has also donated mobile phones to Good Shepherd Cork, and will be facilitating volunteering for its employees with the local charity in the run up to the busy Christmas period.
Jenifer Tangney, Group Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Ornua added: “Ornua is proud to support the vital work of Good Shepherd Cork which has a transformational impact on many lives within the community.”
Speaking on behalf of Alive Coaching, Tom Hennessy said: “The funds raised will be used to address the root causes of homelessness and social exclusion, and aim to break the cycle of homelessness through generations, which is why we are proud to sponsor the event again this year.”
Founded in 1899, Sunday’s Well Boating & Tennis Club is currently celebrating its 125th anniversary. Located in Grattan Street, Edel House provides accommodation for up to 10 families and 18 single women and offers a range of supports and resources working alongside women as they regain independence, including a dual diagnosis worker, making change coordinator, counsellors, a sexual health adviser and child and youth workers, where necessary.
These supports help to maintain self-esteem and build confidence and morale while women are looking for their own accommodation. Edel House also provide a range of supports to children staying in the shelter on a one-to-one basis, including a weekly Youth Club and planned activities and outings.
