'Lynchpin of that family' laid to rest
A woman in her 70s who was killed when a car mounted a footpath in Charleville has been laid to rest.
Mary Fehilly, who was the mother-in-law of Clare TD Cathal Crowe, was buried yesterday, Wednesday, in Holy Cross Cemetery in her home town of Charleville.
She leaves behind her husband George, her children Nollaig, Siobhán, Pádraig, Maeve, and Gearóid, and her grandchildren Eoghan, Aisling, Keelin, Darragh, Sam, Charlie, Eve, Saoirse, Caoimhe, and Josh.
Ms Fehilly died after she and a man in his 60s were struck by a car while walking in Charleville. They were both rushed to CUH by emergency services where Ms Fehilly later died from her injuries.
The injured man is understood to be in a stable condition at CUH.
Taking to social media, Deputy Crowe paid tribute to Ms Fehilly and said he would be temporarily standing down from canvassing for the upcoming general election.
“I struck gold when I married into Maeve’s amazing family. The fabulous lynchpin of that family was Mary Fehilly. We are absolutely heartbroken to have tragically lost Mary this weekend.
“She was the most wonderful mother to Maeve and her siblings and an adoring wife to George. Mary, there will not be the likes of you again. Sleep gently with the angels,” he wrote.
Ms Fehilly’s death marks the second time in recent weeks that a pedestrian has been killed in North Cork following the death of Cal O'Keefe, 90, in Fermoy on 18 October.
Mr O’Keefe, a retired teacher and farmer, was killed while trying to save the life of a woman in her 60s by pushing her out of the way of an oncoming vehicle.
The woman was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
In September, a female pedestrian in her 40s was seriously injured after being struck by a car on the Mill Road in Kanturk.
