Ten years and counting
One of the longest established and most admired string quartets on the world stage will be performing in Cork city this month. It’s been a decade of talking all about biology for one of UCC’s societies.
Since its founding in 2014, the Biology Society (BioSoc) has evolved from a small circle of enthusiasts into a thriving network that welcomes anyone with an interest in biology, regardless of their field of study.
Known for organising educational events, academic talks and field trips, the society offers students valuable opportunities to connect with industry leaders, researchers, and innovators, helping to shape their academic and professional paths.
Its 10th anniversary marked a decade of commitment to promoting the biological sciences and fostering a vibrant academic and social community for students at UCC.
The 10th anniversary celebration took place at Rosie Maddison’s on Bandon Road, bringing together past and present members to honour the society’s journey, achievements, and look forward to its future.
Reflecting on the society’s journey, founder and first chairperson Michael Sheehan said: “Myself and the other old BioSoc heads can’t get enough of how well the society is doing! Back in the day we had a gentle mental breakdown and nearly bankrupted the society with our first ball, seeing the event sell out in a morning is surreal.
“I’ve heard stories from a couple of people who were on a bus or in a bar and heard students talking excitedly about BioSoc events. It means the world to see this community thrive within UCC, and we can’t wait to see how future students find new ways to make lasting memories and friendships while advancing their passions for all things biology!”
Breda, the current Chairperson of UCC Biology Society, said: “Our 10th anniversary is not just a look back at our history; it’s a celebration of everyone who has been part of BioSoc—the members, alumni, and faculty who have supported us over the years. We’re incredibly proud of BioSoc’s journey so far, and we’re excited for what the future holds for our society and its members.”
Over the past decade, the UCC Biology Society has created a lasting legacy of collaboration, learning, and passion for the biological sciences.
Looking to the future, UCC Biology Society is eager to continue inspiring and empowering the next generation of biologists to make meaningful contributions to the field.
