Spring to bring return of the Wasps
Wasps vs Humans, easily one of Cork’s most distinctive musical acts, are hitting the ground running this year with the announcement of a string of live dates this spring.
The announcement comes on the back of their debut album, 'Scratchcard Empires' released last year.
Teaming up with some of Ireland's finest underground artists, the gigs will see Jinx Lennon, Captain Moonlight, and Julie Goo joining forces with Wasps, hitting audiences with their brand of outspoken energy driven performances.
The run kicks off in Dublin’s Thomas House on 1 March with support from Captain Moonlight, before they head back to Cork for a show in Levis' Corner House in Ballydehob on 15 March.
On 4 April they will play Winthrop Avenue in Cork city with support from Irish punk and urban poet, Jinx Lennon.
Then on 12 April they play Cleere's Theatre in Kilkenny with both Jinx Lennon and Captain Moonlight, before a show on 2 May in Dundalk’s Spirit Store with special guest to be confirmed.
Wasps vs Humans, a husband-and-wife duo of Carl Antony and Linda Plover, spent 2024 further honing their distinctive alt punk/folk sound and releasing their debut album, 'Scratchcard Empires' in October, which received glowing reviews across Irish media.
With a well-earned reputation for high-octane live performances, Wasps’ debut album perfectly captures the raw, live energy typical of their unmistakeable sound; an anarchic mix of drums, bodhrán, whistles, punk poetry, songs and beats.
Featuring singles, '20 million Andrew Tates', 'Price You Pay', and 'Ugly America', ‘Scratchcard Empires’ is a dark take on life’s expectations, dealing with disappointment, inner city crime, an obsessive craving culture, and all topped off with a healthy dollop of desperation.
This man needs little introduction these days. He has been at the periphery of the Irish music scene since the mid-eighties playing in Novena Babes, Silver Seeds, Sneaky Pete, and The Ostrich before going solo in 1999. Described as “Ireland's premier punk poet”, he writes about his own head wrecks, the local oddballs, the drama, and the characters of Dundalk border existence and beyond.
One of Irish hip-hop's finest, Kilkenny rapper Captain Moonlight has never been one to avoid saying what’s on his mind; a rapper, writer, producer, and political vomit inducer, his social commentary tackles serious issues with a dash of punk, a swing of a hurl, and a folk horror narrative, creating intelligent, hard-hitting, often humorous hip-hop.
The multi-talented Julie Goo is an award-winning bilingual poet, writer, and singer from Cork city. Widely published, she has performed her work at numerous festivals and conferences and is currently compiling her first English language poetry collection. Her debut Irish language collection ‘Dána’ was published in 2021 with selected poems having been translated into German and Italian.
