Friends laid to rest this week
One of two men found dead in Cork city on the same day was laid to rest yesterday, with his friend’s funeral to take place today, Thursday.
Shane O’Sullivan, 31, was buried yesterday in St Finbarr’s Cemetery following a requiem mass in the Church of the Way of the Cross, Togher.
Mr O’Sullivan, who was from Togher Road and late of Gurranabraher in Cork city, was found dead in Kyrl’s Quay on Friday afternoon.
The father of three leaves behind children Brooke, Abbey, and Kayla-May, parents Deirdre and Seamus, and sister Chloe.
Several hours before Mr O’Sullivan’s body was discovered, the body of 28 year old Shane Grimes was found at Fitzgerald's Park. It is understood the two men were known to each other and were good friends. Both men died of a drug overdose.
A requiem mass will be held for Mr Grimes at 11am today in the Church of the Ascension, Gurranabraher. He will be laid to rest afterwards at St Catherine’s Cemetery, Kilcully.
With the men’s bodies having been found within hours of each other and in similar circumstances, there have been growing concerns that a particularly dangerous or contaminated batch of narcotics may have entered Cork’s drug market. However, a spokesperson from the HSE has confirmed there is currently no indication that extra risky batches of heroin are in circulation on Leeside.
“The HSE has liaised with local stakeholders and no future cases of concern or increases in overdoes have been reported to the HSE. As a result, no risk communication or alert was issued by the HSE,” said the spokesperson.
They added: “The HSE works with national services to review drug trends and communications are issued when extra risky batches are identified on the market.”
Garda injured during drugs raid
Meanwhile, a man arrested in connection with a drugs raid in Cork city on Saturday which resulted in a garda being injured and taken to hospital, has appeared before a sitting of Cork District Court.
It is understood the incident occurred at a residence on Cork city’s northside where a quantity of drugs and cash were also seized.
It is reported that the garda suffered a broken kneecap and is being treated at CUH.
