Cork's Egan amongst wave of winter transfers for the Irish

Cork footballer John Eagan has been snapped up on the last day of the winter transfer window, signing an 18 month deal with EFL Championship side Hull City.

The Republic of Ireland international, 32, was signed from Burnley FC on Monday who currently sit 3rd in the division.

He makes the move to struggling Hull City having only made seven appearances for Burnley since signing on a free transfer last September. Hull City currently sit 21st in the league.

“I’m delighted. I’d known about the interest for a couple of weeks but wasn’t sure if it was going to happen,” Egan told the club’s website.

The highest profile move for an Irish player this window came in the form of striker Evan Ferguson’s loan move to Graham Potter’s West Ham United until the end of the season from Brighton.

In other transfer news, Irish left-wing-back Tayo Adaramola has joined EFL League Two side Bradford City on loan from Crystal Palace until the end of the season. Adaramola, 19, made his debut for the Republic of Ireland U21 team in 2022.

Meanwhile, the future is looking bright for 24 year old Irish striker Millenic Alli who has completed a move to EFL Championship side, Luton Town. The move marks a huge milestone in the Dublin native’s career having jumped from National League club FC Halifax Town to League One club Exeter City last January.

Another Irish player on the move was goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu who has signed for Belgian side Standard Liège on loan from Southampton for the rest of the season.

Former Cork City FC player and Republic of Ireland under 21 international, Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh, also secured loan move during the winter window, joining League Two club Accrington Stanley from Premier League side Southampton for the remainder of the season.

Elsewhere, reports have been unusually quiet around talented Cork goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher who stated in no uncertain terms last September that he wanted to leave Liverpool in order to secure first team football. Following some good performances for The Reds this season, the calibre of clubs interested in the former Ringmahon Rangers keeper is likely to be higher than ever. With 23 year old Georgian keeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili, set to join Liverpool in the summer, Kelleher looks certain to get the move he has wanted for some time.
