Train station car park upgrade in the works

An upgrade to the car park at Charleville train station is on the cards with funding recently allocated for the project.

Plans for the upgrade are ongoing with hopes a planning application can be made later in the year.

Minister for Special Education & Inclusion and Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North-West, Michael Moynihan said he has been engaging with Irish Rail to secure funding for the car parking facilities at the train station and it has now been confirmed that funding has been approved and design works are underway.

He said: “I’ve been keen to advance this project as the works are badly needed to ensure commuters have the facilities they need at the train station. Once the design works are complete, a planning application will have to be submitted, which will likely be later this year.

“I will be keeping a close eye on this project to ensure it moves along as quickly as possible.”

He added: “The current car park often reaches capacity, causing frustration for passengers and impacting accessibility. These planned upgrades will not only increase parking capacity but also aim to improve accessibility and enhance the overall station.”

He said this was a significant step forward in delivering much-needed improvements for commuters and residents in the Charleville area.

“I will be working with my colleague, Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien, to ensure there is further funding in place once the planning process is complete so the construction work can commence.

“I want to commend Iarnród Éireann for their commitment to this project and I look forward to continued collaboration as we work towards delivering these vital improvements for Charleville,” Minister Moynihan concluded.
