Ireland's mad to stretch its legs
Conducted by clothing brand, Regatta Great Outdoors, the survey found 82% of respondents are determined to spend more time outdoors this spring and summer.
Overall, 95% of respondents ranked getting outdoors as important for mental well-being.
The survey also showed that screen time is a major concern with 68% of consumers convinced they spend too much time on screens during winter's darker days, while 80% agree reducing screen time in favour of outdoor activities could significantly boost their mental wellbeing.
More than a third of respondents (39%) admitted to spending 3-4 hours on devices per evening during winter. However, with the arrival of longer, brighter evenings, over half (58%) are eager to try a ‘digital detox’ by replacing an hour of screen time with outdoor activities daily. A further third said they would be willing to try a digital detox if they can fit it into their routine.
In terms of preferred activities when out and about, walking was by far the favourite outdoor activity at 83%, versus those who prefer running (5.5%) and cycling (4.9%).
With Ireland’s unpredictable weather in mind, nearly nine in ten respondents emphasised the importance of appropriate outdoor clothing. More than a third of respondents (34%) highlighted the importance of layers for warmth and comfort that can be added to or taken off according as the weather changes throughout the day.
Furthermore, 31% of the sample said a good waterproof jacket was essential to cope with unexpected showers, while a similar number felt that comfortable, durable footwear was a priority to get right.
“This survey really shows how much people in Ireland value the outdoors – not just for staying active, but for supporting their mental well-being too,” said Brian Fox, Managing Director of Regatta Ireland.
“With longer evenings arriving, it’s great to see so many planning to get outside more and take a break from screens. At Regatta, we’re proud to support that with affordable, reliable gear that helps people make the most of the outdoors, no matter the weather.
“Our advice to people is simple: get outdoors – whether it’s for half an hour or a whole day. In Ireland, you’re never far from a scenic view or a great place to walk, so make the most of it. It’s one of the easiest ways to boost both your physical and mental well-being,” he added.
The online survey was carried out last March with a sample size of more than 500 people drawn from across Ireland.
