How to avoid wardrobe fatigue!
Every so often I get into a style rut. I hate everything in my wardrobe, nothing I put together looks right on me, I’m questioning every sartorial decision I ever made and I’m just feeling a bit meh in general.
While it can be so easy to just go on a bit of a shopping spree and completely overhaul your wardrobe, I’ve been there before and take it from me this is not the way to go. I now can recognise the signs of wardrobe fatigue so I like to hold tight and let the moment pass and doing a couple of small little things means I lessen the panicked, expensive impulse buys.
Sometimes the best thing you can do in this situation is strip everything back to the basics. This is where investing in those wardrobe staples will really come into its own. While you may not be putting together any fashion forward looks, you can just ease yourself back into your own style by keeping it very simple and chic.
A slouchy blazer, t-shirt, straight leg jeans and some loafers styled with a gold earring requires very little thought but looks effortlessly put together. Try a shirt dress with a leather belt and ankle boots or a pair of cigarette trousers with a striped top and neckerchief. Before long those creative fashion juices will be flowing leading to perhaps some more daring fashion choices.
Another thing I like to do in these situations is to take a cold hard look at my current wardrobe. What do I wear a lot, what have I not worn in ages? Can I make a mini edit of what I have and remove some items that are surplus to requirement? If I have too many items hanging in the wardrobe, I get completely overwhelmed and I can’t make any decisions about what to wear and invariably end up wearing the same things over and over again.
If you’re feeling uninspired, then set yourself this challenge; take one item that you don’t wear from your wardrobe and style an outfit with it. Do this each week and you’ll soon realise you have plenty of pieces in your wardrobe that can be worn in so many different ways.
If there are some items that you really just can’t seem to style, or that you just have no desire to ever wear again then try a swap shop. I have a friend who absolutely swears by swap shops and always finds super stylish pieces at them.
You could organise one amongst your friends, family or work colleagues or keep an eye out on social media for any happening in your area. These can also be really social and a great way to meet some new people.
While I do often look to Instagram, magazines etc to get a bit of style inspiration, I do find that sometimes this can be a bit overwhelming especially if you’re doubting your own sense of style. You could be completely swayed into a style that is completely not suited to you or your lifestyle so let you be your own fashion inspo.
I regularly take photos of my outfits and save them in a folder in my phone. If you scroll back, you can find great outfits that you’ve put together previously and had forgotten about. I’ll often look at these pictures and remember a piece of clothing that I haven’t worn in ages and I’ll have all the items at hand to recreate the look without having to buy a single thing.
